The modern AECO industry is evolving rapidly, and transitioning from theory to real-world practice often presents a challenge for young professionals. To help future architects and engineers navigate the nuances of BIM technology, we organized a special online lecture for students at the Kyiv Professional College of Architecture, Construction, and Management. The event took place on Thursday, October 15.
I delivered the lecture as CEO and Co-founder of The Heyon, sharing hands-on experience gained from managing complex international projects in Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Italy. No dry theory, only real case studies and proven workflows.
The primary focus was on preparing essential data for decision-making at every stage of the building lifecycle. We covered the journey from point cloud processing to creating comprehensive BIM models, as well as various technology applications, ranging from standard building modernizations to industrial revamps involving adaptive reuse. Students saw how these tools are applied across industrial and public buildings spanning from 2,500 to 16,000 sq m.
Special attention was given to creating as-built models and capturing actual site deviations. This critical phase demands high precision and a thorough understanding of cross-disciplinary coordination between architecture, structures and MEP systems.
We believe that sharing real-world industry experience with students is key to building a strong professional community. Integrating modern digital tools into higher education helps empower graduates who are fully prepared for the AEC industry’s complex challenges.
